PONGO UWA

‘UWA’ is the most infectious track you’ll hear all week; it’s one that you can’t help but dance to. The whole song is a celebration of Pongo’s first return to Angola, since being forced to flee the country at aged eight to escape the civil war. Despite continuing her life in Portugal's capital city Lisbon, Pongo never lost that deep connection to her home, as we see portrayed through the visuals filmed in Dakar, in which high fashion-inspired looks contrast with traditional Angolan streets. The thread that ties it all together is dance; we see an array of expressive styles in sync with the pulsating rhythms of Pongo’s homage to the Kuduro genre. Even the song’s title is derived from the rich culture of Angola: “uwa” means “step” in one of the country’s native languages Kimbundo and is used in children’s games of dodgeball. This playful nostalgia connects Pongo’s past to her present, symbolising all that she’s been through and how she’s never lost her love for the country that truly made her.
